Madrid Masters: Murray dethrones Nadal to seal title

Andy Murray just scored himself a magnificent early birthday present by dethroning clay court king Rafael Nadal on the Spaniard’s very own home ground at the Madrid Open.

The Scot claimed his second clay court title with a flawless display of skill set, winning 6-3, 6-2 over the world number four. It was just a week ago that Murray seal his first ever victory on clay; beating German Philipp Kohlscheriber in the postponed final of the Munich Open.

Nicknamed ‘King of Clay’ due to this nine French Open titles and complete dominance of the surface over the past decade, Nadal had no answers to his defeat. Murray- who had lost all six of his previous clay court meetings with Nadal- played with conviction throughout the whole game. His variation and shot selection was the key factor in grounding the great Spaniard.

“I couldn’t have done much more,” said Murray after the match.. “It’s one of the toughest things in tennis to try to beat Rafa on clay. It’s extremely tough and this is the reason why we play tennis – for these matches.”

Nadal, who was aiming to bag his fifth Madrid title on that day, conceded he had been beaten by a better player.

“You are having a great season. Congratulations Andy. You were better than me today. All the best for Roland Garros.”

Foreseeing the French Open, Murray had expressed his optimism despite being shown the exit by Nadal in the semis last year.

“I’ve played well at Roland Garros in the past but my game wasn’t ready to win there,” he said. “I’ve played Rafa a few times on clay and this obviously gives me confidence. I don’t go in as one of the favourites but, if I play like this, I’ll give myself an opportunity and that is all you can ask.”

The ATP world tour masters sets it next stop in Rome for a week, starting today. Both Murray and Nadal have received a first round bye.
