The Indonesian badminton team, composed of 23 players and 6 coaches have departed for Dongguan,China ahead of the Sudirman Cup, which will take place at the end of next week.
Led by Chef de Mission Achmad Budiharto, the team is aiming to reach the final of the competition, with playmaking men’s duo Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan, mixed doubles’ Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir and women’s pair Greysia Polii and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari.
“The Sudirman Cup is a team championship, where all the players have to cooperate for the win. If we are playing, we need to remember that this is for the team and all our teammates are rooting for us and therefore we need to present our best performance,” said Liliyana to Badmintonindonesia.org.
The last time Indonesia won the cup trophy was 1989, though this time around, they intend to restore the pride of the nation in an event that originates from their country.
The Indonesians will open their Sudirman Cup campaign against England on Monday, followed by a second match against Denmark on Wednesday.
