Rafael Nadal crashes out of Barcelona Open

Fourteen-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal succumbed to a defeat against 13th seed Fabio Fognini, effectively knocking him out of the Barcelona Open.

Fognini was far more superior throughout the game, clinching a 6-3, 7-6(6) win to hand Nadal his earliest exit in the competition for over 12 years.

Nadal was very poor in the first set, losing 6-3, but he did bounce back in the second one to apply more pressure on Fognini, though the 27 year-old was far more resilient, securing a 7-6(6) win.

“My play was awful and I didn’t deserve to win,” said Nadal.

“Fognini played better than me and deserved to win,” Nadal added. “Until I resolve the ups and downs I have had too often this season I will continue to be vulnerable.”

This victory marks Fognini’s second win over Nadal this year, having beaten the Spaniard in the semi final of the Rio Open.
