National badminton player Chong Wei Feng has earned himself a ticket into the quarter-final of the Badminton Asia Championship after defeating Artyom Savatyugin of Uzbekistan in a two-set match.
The world no 39 bludgeoned his opponent in only 22 minutes; clinching an easy 21-6 win in the first set before winning the second one 21-9.
As a result, Wei Feng has set up a tie against China’s Tien Houwei in the last eight of the competition. World number 12 Tian had an intense battle with South Korea’s Lee Dong Keun. The Chinese endured a defeat in the first set 17-21, before bouncing back to secure an easy 21-8, 21-11 win in the following two sets to ultimately clinch the win.
But there was still bad news for Malaysia after its sole representative in women’s singles Tee Jing Yi, was sent packing after suffering a defeated to South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun.
Jing Yi was obliterated by South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun in two sets, 8-21 and 11-21. Sung will take on Wang Yihan of China, who outplayed Febe Kusumastuti of Indonesia 21-14 and 21-9.
