Defending champion Kei Nishikori has advanced into the third round of the Barcelona Open after downing Russian star Teymuraz Gabashvili.
The Japanese world number four, who was making his season debut on clay, showed no signs of slowing down when he trashed the Russian with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
The top seed dominated the match with a strong lead by breaking early in the first set before powering through to clinch the second one and book his spot in the next round.
This victory will now allow Nishikori to face either Portugal’s Joao Sousa or Santiago Giraldo in the third round, depending on the outcome of their tie
