National diving duo Muhammad Syafiq Puteh and Loh Zhiayi made history when they became the first Malaysians to win the 3m springboard synchronized mixed event at the Puerto Rico Diving Grand Prix.
The Malaysian team dominated the competition with a decent lead of 292.86 points to clinch the gold medal, while China’s Lingrui Liu and Qiyuan Hu, who collected 277.20 points, had to settle for silver. Sebastian Villa Castaneda and Diana Pineda of Columbia on the other hand collected 267.99 points for the bronze medal.
Newcomer Mohd Syafiq only made his international debut with Zhiayi at the Canadian Diving Grand Prix last weekend and he certainly proved his mettle by showcasing good chemistry with Zhiayi to clinch this win.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Ooi Tze Liang and Azman Ahmad Amsyar managed to secure silver in the men’s 3m springboard synchronized event, by accomplishing 377.13 points. They were edged out by Japan’s Sho Sakai and Ken; both of whom collected 378.27 points.
