Monte Carlo Masters: Federer, Nadal advance into last 16

14-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal is through advanced to the last 16 of the Monte Carlo Masters after demolishing Frenchman Lucas Pouille.

The Spaniard, who is bidding to secure his second clay court title of the year, blasted a 6-2, 6-1 second-round win over the 21-year-old Pouille.

Nadal has been struggling for form this year, primarily due to a wrist injury and appendicitis that he picked up towards the end of last year. However, he certainly dominated this one, converting four of his seven break points and won 75% of his service points.

This will now allow him to set-up a third round clash against 15th seed American John Isner, who took out Viktor Troicki in his previous tie, winning 7-6(4), 7-5(5).

Meanwhile, second seed Roger Federer is also through to the last 16, sending world number 35 Jeremy Chardy packing in the second round. The score line of his victory was also identical to Nadal’s one, as he clinched a 6-2, 6-1 win in below an hour.

Federer will next face France’s Gael Monfils.
