Malaysian hockey legend Maninderjit Singh believes that Neil Hawgood is not qualified to make the cut as the national head coach.
The former Australian hockey ace who was initially elected as the consultant of the Malaysian national team is currently a potential head coach candidate to take over the national squad. The MHC revealed that the former Indian women’s coach will first be judged during a probation period before they finalize their decision.
Maninderjit Singh who was previously the treasurer of the MHC, said that he does not have the qualifications that we need to build up the national hockey squad.
“They should select a coach with more caliber, and that candidate must have a first grade coaching certificate that’s certified by the Federation International Hockey (FIH).” Maninderjit Singh was quoted as saying by Arena Metro.
“That individual needs a minimum of 10 years of experience to be able to monitor a national squad and consistency to perform in the Olympic Games and the World Championship.”
He then added that it would make more sense if they were to hire a more qualified local coach or otherwise, search for another international coach.
Similarly, former national coach Datuk Yogeswari as well had questioned Hawgood’s capabilities, claiming that he hasn’t been tested at the highest level.
The decision of the former Australian star’s status as head coach will only be announced on the 13th of May during the MHC Annual General meeting.
