Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Malaysia rip Canada apart

Malaysia got back to winning ways in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup as they completed a massive 4-1 win over Canada on Saturday night.

Beng Hai’s squad loss to Korea on Thursday and having had one day to rest, they were far more impressive against the Canadians, breaking the deadlock as early as on the 5th minute mark, through 20 year-old Haziq Shamsul.

Just one minute later, Nabil Noor doubled their lead to put Malaysia in the driving seat.

The Canadian team then upped their defence, adopting a cautious approach to keep the Malaysian attackers. They managed to do that until the third quarter before Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin scored their third goal on the 38th minute.

The away side though, did manage to pull one back; Matthew Sarmento found the back of the net just two minutes after Tengku had made it 3-0.

But Malaysia never really looked like they were going to slow down; increasing their tempo upon conceding one, allowing Haziq Shamsul to score on the 43rd minute to make it 4-1. The scoreline eventually remained till the end, allowing Beng Hai’s men to clinch victory.

The win means that Malaysia finished 5th in the tournament, behind India, South Korea, New Zealand as well as Australia. They will be taking on Canada again on Sunday night, for the 5th-6th place classification match.
