National hockey coach Stephen van Huizen believes that Malaysia have what it takes to defeat South Korea and claim their second win in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup; only if they buck up and remain consistent on the field.
After two consecutive losses, Malaysia got their first win of the tournament last night, defeating India in what was a close affair in Ipoh. But while Stephen heaped praises on them for claiming the win, he was quick to point out that they need to keep that momentum going against South Korea tonight.
“They fought to the very end, especially when they scored at the very last-minute to break the deadlock and win,” he told FourthOfficial.com
“It was a close match and they took their chances well. They defended well in the penalty corner. They are improving in their games. Yesterday, everyone played their part; it was a good team effort.
“Tonight, we need to buck up and develop consistency. We played well in the previous game, we just have to keep that going against South Korea. The boys will have to cut on the unforced errors, not simply give turnovers, and pass if there aren’t any options,” he added.
The former national hockey ace went on pay tribute to national goalkeeper Kumar Subramaniam, who was awarded a plaque for getting his 250th cap for the country last night.
“It all boils down to his determination, and he’s had that for many years now. He’s 35 now, but the man is still determined to play in the Olympics. However, age will never be a hindrance for him,” he added.
