Malaysian representatives at the Singapore Open were all handed first round defeats yesterday, with shuttlers from all categories failing to progress into the following round.
The recent Indian Open and Singapore Open was largely forgettable as far as Malaysian shuttlers are concerned, and even the Singapore Open has been added to their list after a complete wipe out in the first round.
Arif Latif, who did incredibly well in the qualifiers, failed miserably when he was destroyed by Indonesia’s Simon Santoso. The first was relatively decent as Arif lost it 21-14, but the second one was completely embarrassing as he suffered a whopping 21-4 defeat to bow out of the tournament.
Similarly, Chong Wei Feng, who was lucky enough to make it to the main draw due to last-minute withdrawals, was sent packing by world number 2 Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka in a span of 35 minutes.
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles, Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong suffered a close loss to Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan. They comfortably won the first set 21-18 before the Indonesian duo bounced back to clinch the following two sets with a 21-15, 21-14 victory.
In the women’s doubles, Malaysia’s Amelia Alicia Anscelly and Soon Fie Cho were demolished by China’s Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang 21-15, 21-18 , in just 31 minutes.
National mixed doubles shuttlers Jian Yi Lee and Peiy Zhean Lim were also sent packing by Indonesia’s Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir; who only took 14 minutes to conclude a 21-15, 21-7 win.
