National singles shuttlers Mohd Arif Latif and Chong Wei Feng are through to the main draw of the Singapore Open after clinching victories in their respective qualifying ties yesterday.
Arif Latif only need 19 minutes to demolish Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov, clinching a 21-12, 21-16 win before continuing his good start by defeating Singapore’s Derek Wong Zi Liang to book his spot in the main draw. He will be facing Simon Santoso of Indonesia in the opening round.
Meanwhile, Wei Feng progressed into the main draw after there were last-minute withdrawals in the competition. The 27 year-old will be replacing Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto and will be taking on another Indonesian, Dionysius Hayom in the opening round of the main draw.
Two other Malaysians were sent packing at the qualifying stages. Zulfadli defeated Thailand’s Suppanyu Avihingsanon before losing to India’s Sai Praneeth. Liew Daren on the other hand, exited the competition after a close battle with India’s Ajay Jayaram.
