Saina Nehwal remains unfazed despite losing No 1 spot

Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal believes that it’s only a matter of time before she reclaims her No 1 spot on the BWF rankings, after losing it last Sunday.

Saina lost the top spot after she was edged by China’s Lie Xuerui, who claimed a 21-13, 17-21, 20-22 in the semis of the Malaysian Open. The victory allowed Xuerui to reclaim the spot that she’s held since 2012, having lost it at the Indian Open last week.

However, the 25 year-old isn’t paying too much attention to the shift, despite suggesting that she was unhappy with some of the umpire’s decision, during her defeat at the Malaysia Open.

“I was so close to beating her but two calls went against me in the last game,” Saina told Times of India.

“I was 19-18 up in the third game and my smash (which was called incorrect) was right, and I would have been 20-18. But the umpire overruled. And I couldn’t do anything after the match was over and she was declared the winner.

“I am happy that I reached No.1 and in the future, I will be world No.1 again. Rankings hardly matter. What is important is that I have been playing consistently,” she added.
