World number one Chen Long showcased an exceptional performance to down two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan and claim his maiden Malaysian Open title.
Lin Dan, who had local supporters backing him at the Putra Stadium, suffered a scrappy 20-22, 21-13, 21-11 defeat against his compatriot, Chen Long. Despite claiming the first set, he could not prevent Chen from bouncing back to claim the following two sets, which effectively handed him the title as well.
Lin Dan, who has bagged 56 career titles in total, is yet to secure a Malaysian Open title and he certainly intends to return and try his luck again next year.
“I will be coming back next year,” Lin Dan was quoted as saying by Harian Metro.
“Moreover, the championship will still be within the time period where points can be collected for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. I’m so excited for the Olympics, and it’ll be nice if Chong Wei qualifies as well.
“It doesn’t matter who wins in Brazil, but if possible, we want to be the oldest men’s singles player to secure the gold medal,” he added.
