British tennis star Heather Watson edged into the second round of the Miami Open after clinching a close victory over Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina
Having impressed at the BNP Paribas Open last week, the British number one secured a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory, to continue her fine form in recent weeks.
The former world number 41 broke a set in the opening round. She was down 4-0 within 15 minutes, as she lost the first set, committing 20 unforced errors in the process.
The British number one then bounced back to level the match in the following set and secured the decider before finally winning in two hours and 23 minutes.
“I think both of us were feeling the same, it was just who could stick it out mentally and fight through the conditions,” Heather was quoted as saying by the BBC.
She will next take on German 13th seed Angelique Kerber in the second round, and Heather is certainly not keen on underestimating her opponent.
“We had a close match at Wimbledon, she’s very consistent, tough competitor so I will definitely have to up my game.”
