The Malaysian national team will be taking on English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in a friendly game that is slated to take place on the 27th of May.
Reports initially emerged in February that Spurs were looking to embark on a series of friendly games across Asia, a plan that was derived from their partnership with American International Assurance (AIA). The new partnership agreement allows AIA to select destinations for exhibition games and Malaysia was always a part of the list.
However, it now appears that Tottenham will be dropping by sooner than expected, with Malaysian national team head coach Dollah Salleh confirming that both sides will be facing off on the 27th of May.
“As of now, we have no other friendly games scheduled except for the one against Tottenham Hotspur on the 27th of May as well as the one against Liverpool, on the 24th of July,” he told Berita Harian.
Ironically though, the mentioned date is merely three days after what will be their final Premier League game of the season, against Everton on the 24th of May. By the looks of it, the trip will be a post-season friendly, after which players and staff will go a short break before they resume preparation for the following season.
As for Dollah and co, there will be plenty at stake. The national team has departed for Muscat, where they will be taking on Oman’s national squad in a friendly game and Dollah also intends to use the game against Spurs as a crucial part of his side’s preparation for the World Cup qualifiers in June.
“Though the match does state ‘MalaysianXI’, I will only be using local players as these games will be integral for our World Cup qualifiers,” he added.
