Manchester United boosted their hopes of Champions League qualification by securing a massive, massive victory over Liverpool last night. Louis van Gaal retained the exact starting eleven that impressed against Tottenham Hotspur last week and they did not disappoint by dominating the first half, scoring one goal through Juan Mata.
But the defining moment came right after the half time break. Steven Gerrard was introduced as a half-time substitute and barely a minute into the second half, the Liverpool captain gets sent off for a pointless stamp on Ander Herrera, much to the shock and dismay of Liverpool fans. United capitalized and upped their tempo, which eventually led to Juan Mata’s sensational second goal.
Daniel Sturridge pulled one back, but despite their best efforts to muster a comeback, the Red Devils held on to secure the win; allowing Twitter to inevitably explode with hilarity!
