FIFA’s Executive Committee have confirmed that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar would be played during the winter and that the final of the tournament would take place on December 18.
Following concerns over intense summer temperatures, FIFA opted to move the tournament to winter, claiming that the searing heat of summer was never going to be ideal for the tournament.
“The Executive Committee today confirmed that the 2022 World Cup will be staged in November/December with the final to be on December 18,” FIFA said in a statement.
While the World Cup is usually scheduled based on a time frame of 32 days, FIFA have also agreed to reduce the 2022 World Cup to 28 or 29 days.
“In principle, it was agreed that the tournament should be played over a reduced timeframe, for instance 28 days.”
UEFA had pushed for the final to be scheduled on December 23rd, but FIFA members opposed the option, suggesting that it could cause problems for fans and players who will be trying to get home in time for Christmas . Besides that, it would also affect the club’s football festive program.
