BNP Paribas Open: Serena Williams eases into semis

Serena Williams has booked her spot in the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open after thrashing Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky at Indian Wells.

The world number one sent the Swiss packing in the last eight, downing her 7-5, 6-3, to complete a straight sets victory. The win allowed Serena to extend her winning streak over Bacsinszky to 15 matches.

“I’m just happy I was able to get through and still be alive in this tournament when I haven’t clearly been the Serena that we all know,” she said.

“The only thing is I know can I play a lot better. I really take a lot of solace in that,” Williams said.

“Even if I don’t win this event, I know I can play a tremendous amount better than what I have been playing.”

In the opening set, the Swiss managed to dominate through a break before the world number one bounced back with two breaks of her own to secure a 7-5 victory. The second set was far more straightforward for Serena, as the cruised to a 6-3 win.

Serena will next face third seed Simona Halep, who edged over Carla Suarez with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory.
