Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) claim that the absence of former world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei in the 2015 Malaysian Open, may affect the level of excitement it usually provides.
Chong Wei will be forced to sit out of the tournament that he has won 10 times after testing positive for a banned substance at the World Championship in Copenhagen last year.
But as far as BAM deputy president Datuk Norza Zakaria is concerned, his absence means that other national players would have to step things up in order to charm the crowd and keep the excitement going.
“Whether it’s the singles or doubles players, we hope they can mesmerize the crowd like Chong Wei did,” he told reporters after the 2014 Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100 PLUS award presentation ceremony.
The 2015 Malaysian Open will be held from March 31 to April 5 at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
