Australian GP: Rosberg tops Hamilton in free practice

Mercedes have dominated the free practice at Australian Grand Prix with Nico Rosberg beating Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton in setting the benchmark pace.

The German managed to set the fastest lap, clocking one minute, 27.697 seconds, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Ferarri’s Sebastian Vettel. This marks the second time that Nico Rosberg has defeated Hamilton in two practice sessions.

McLaren’s Kevin Magnussen, who is standing in for Fernando Alonso after his recent crash, skidded into the gravel at turn six and his car had to be winched off the track.

This came after he and fellow McLaren teammate Jenson Button finished last during first session though Button managed to fight back in the second session and ended up being the 12th best.

However, the Saubers cars did not do any laps in the first session, though Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericson did go down during the second session, finishing 11th and 15th respectively.

They are currently facing a court case against Dutch driver Giedo van der Garde, who was promised a race seat this year.
