World No. 1 female tennis player Serena Williams will be headlining the upcoming Hoffman Cup, which is set to take place in Perth next week.
Despite agreeing to contest in it, there were several concerns over her official confirmation, considering that three players have pulled out of the tournament thus far. Even Williams’ initial partner for the Mixed Event, Jack Sop, had to withdraw due to a hip injury.
Nonetheless, he has been replaced by John Isner, who is currently ranked 19th in the world. And tournament director Paul Kilderry has also reaffirmed Serena Williams’ presence at the tournament, claiming she will be a joy to watch next week.
“It’s not even a question, not even a doubt. She’ll be here,’’ Kilderry said. “Obviously she’s a headliner wherever she goes in the world. She’s probably the most famous female athlete on the planet. She’s a great star and a great attraction for us.’’
“She was pretty happy to get such a strong partner at the last minute,’’ Kilderry said. “She’s pretty competitive, Serena, and I know that when she plays she always wants to do well. Once she hits the court here she’s going to want to win the whole thing.’’
