Chinese shuttler Chen Long will be replacing suspended Malaysian player Lee Chong Wei as the new World No. 1 on Thursday
Having won the men’s singles final at the BWF World Superseries Finals, Chen Long effectively accumulated enough points to overtake Lee Chong Wei at the top of the world rankings.
Chen Long has went into the final with 84,401 points, but after the 21-16, 21-10 victory over Denmark’S Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, his total points was bumped up to 90,361 points, which is way above Chong Wei’s 84,361 points.
Hence, Chong Wei will no longer hold the World No. 1 title, when the updated rankings are released on Thursday.
“What can I do? This case has cost me a lot and I have to accept it,” said Lee Chong Wei to the New Straits Times.
“It is not easy to stay on top for six years. I just want this case to end as soon possible so that I can get on court and reclaim my No 1 spot, but who knows how long it take?”
