Malaysian squash queen Nicol David created more history yesterday, seizing her eighth World Championship title after a scintillating final battle against Egyptian rival Raneem El Weleily.
Backed by home support, Raneem was on fire in the final, claiming the first set 11-5. But Nicol David bounced back to secure a 11-8 win in the second set, before Raneem eventually clinched the third one 11-7.
Both players entered the fourth set, knowing that a victory for Raneem would give her the title, and she even went into a 10-6 lead at one point, needing just one point to clinch the title.
That being said, Nicol David held on and fought hard to clinch the fourth set 14-12, before ultimately triumphing in the final set with a score line of 11-5.
The victory allowed Nicol to be reinstated as the World Champion, having lost the title on home soil back in March 2014.
