BAM Vice President: Chong Wei Feng cost us the Axiata Cup

Badminton Association of Malaysia’s Vice President Datuk Mohammad Norza Zakaria slammed the performance of Chong Wei Feng during the recent Axiata Cup, claiming that his terrible showing contributed to their semi final exit.

The 27 year-old shuttler was given the mantle of leading the Men’s Single department, with Lee Chong Wei’s suspension ruling him out of the competition. However, the Kedah-born player did not fulfill his role, as far as Norza Zakaria is concerned.

“One of the major reasons behind our loss was the absence of Lee Chong Wei. But the second reasons is Chong Wei Feng,” he told Sinar Harian.

“I’m extremely disappointed with his performances during the tournament. It seems to be getting worse by the day, and there are no signs of improvements at all.”

Malaysia were knocked out in the semis by Indonesia, before also succumbing to a defeat against the Asian All Stars in the third-fourth placing match; drawing plenty of criticism from fans.

Norza echoes their sentiments to a certain extent, but while he was quick to criticize Wei Feng, the BAM Vice President also stated that there were plenty of positives to take home from the tournament.

“Though we didn’t make it to the final, and failed to defend our title, I’m still relatively proud of the team. Some players deserve to be applauded, particularly Tee Jing Yi and our men’s doubles team,” he added.
