Defending champion, Malaysia booked their ticket to the semifinals of the Axiata Cup in Jakarta, despite being tied 2-2 with Singapore in their final preliminary round.
Malaysia finished in fourth place, after its shuttlers collected 17 points overall from four wins, two defeats and a draw.
In Wednesday’s match, Malaysia’s winning points came from the men’s singles and doubles.
Liew Daren prevailed against Loh Kean Yew in three sets, 18-21, 21-15 and 21-19. However, the score tied at 1-1, after Tee Jing Yi went down to Liang Xiaou Yu in 8-21 and 11-21.
Men’s doubles Tan Wee Keong-Tan Boon Heong defeated Loh Kean Hean-Terry Hee Yong Kai 21-16 and 21-17 to put Malaysia ahead again.
But Malaysia missed a chance at victory when mixed doubles pair Peng Soon-Lai Pei Jing lost to Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Tan Wei Han in 12-21 and 18-21.
The draw for the semis will be held tomorrow, and the four teams that made it through including Indonesia, Thailand and Asia All Stars, will be playing at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras on Saturday and Sunday.
