Selangor FA are reportedly close to securing the signature of experienced Australian defender Robert Cornthwaite to spearhead their defence in 2015.
The Red Giants are yet to entirely finalize their foreign signings, with the likes of Steve Pantelidies and Paulo Rangel all being released, but Cornthwaite has been on their radar for quite some time now, and it appears that they are relatively close to capturing him.
Should negotiations come to a positive conclusion, he’ll sign a one-year contract and will be set to partner the industrious Shahrom Kalam at the heart of Selangor’s defence in the upcoming season of Super League.
The 29 year-old would come in with a wealth of experience, having plied his trade in the A-League as well as the K-League more recently. He started out his career with Adelaide City FC, before eventually signing for Adelaide United in the A-League.
After spending six years with them between 2005 to 2011, Cornthwaite then made the move over to South Korea, signing for Jeonnam Dragons. He established himself as a key player with them and has made over 90 appearances for them till date.
Besides that, his height (1.99m) will be a massive asset for Selangor, without taking into account that Cornthwaite has also played for the Australian national team, making eight appearances thus far.
