The 43 year-old former Man United skipper, became Paul Lambert’s assistant manager in July, but he also held a similar position within the Irish national team, alongside Martin O’Neill.
And according to him, balancing the tasks became an arduous process, leading to his resignation from the Villa role earlier today.
“Ultimately, my roles with Villa and Ireland and combining my commitment to these have become too much. It isn’t fair to either Villa or Ireland, so I’ve made this decision,” Keane said.
Paul Lambert accepted the decision as it was done in the best interest of the club itself, and also promised that the process of finding a replacement will not be a difficult one.
“Roy came to me this morning and he informed me that, ultimately, the difficulty of combining both roles has prompted his decision, which I respect totally,” he said.
“In the brief period we have worked together he has been great in the role and I understand his reasons for leaving,” Lambert added on.
