UEFA Champions League: Thursday Wrap Up

Arsenal marched into the last 16 of the Champions League after securing a massive 2-0 win at home against Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund. Yaya Sanogo gave them an early lead on the 2nd minute mark, but Dortmund kept pushing hard in search of the equalizer for the rest of the first half. Arsenal though, were diligent enough to maintain the score, heading into the break, before coming out for the second half, and increasing their lead through Alexis Sanchez’s strike on the 57th minute.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid also booked their Round of 16 spot after a scintillating 4-0 win over Olympiacos. Raul Garcia broke the deadlock within the first 10 minutes, though Atletico continued to showcase their supremacy, thanks to Mario Manzukic’s hat-rick. He scored once on the 38th minute, before adding two more in the second half; one on the 62nd minute and the other one just three minutes later. The victory ensured Atletico’s progression into the next stage of the competition.

Liverpool were held to a disappointing 2-2 draw against minnows Ludogorets, with Terziev snatching a late equalizer for the home side. Danny Ambalo placed the hosts ahead as early as on the 3rd minute, before Ricky Lambert justified his inclusion in the starting line up by scoring on the 8th minute mark, to level the score. Jordan Henderson then scored on the 33rd minute, with Liverpool going on to dominate and protect their lead. However, Ludogorets came back in style, finding the back of the net on the 88th minute to secure a pivotal point on the day.

Real Madrid maintained their 100% record in the Champions League, courtesy of a slender 1-0 win over FC Basel in Switzerland. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal in the game, just five minute after the half hour’s mark, to secure the victory. At the same time, Juventus also secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Malmo, thanks to goals from Fernando Llorente in the first half, and Carlo Tevez just before the game ended.
