Wigan Athletic appoint Malky Mackay as new boss

Wigan Athletic have confirmed the appointment of Malky Mackay as their new head coach, after the recent dismissal of Uwe Rosler.

The Championships side have struggled under the guidance of Rosler, having won only 3 out of their 17 league games so far, which inevitably led to his sacking last week.

Since then, the Latics have been on the hunt for a new manager, though speculations on Malky’s potential appointment came along with controversy as well. The former Cardiff manager is still under investigation with regards to allegations of him making racist and sexist remarks via text messages during his tenure in the Welsh capital.

However, Wigan chairman Dave Whelan proceeded to interview the man himself, and decided to go ahead with the appointment earlier today.

“I know that this appointment will draw criticism in some quarters but we go into it with our eyes open and we have nothing to hide on this subject,” Whelan told the club website.

“Malky made a mistake, he knows that, we know that and we have discussed this issue at length face to face. He apologised publicly for what happened at the time and has paid for what he did, in terms of the bad publicity he has received since and will no doubt continue to suffer in the future.

“But I believe that it is now time to move on.

“Contrary to the way he has been portrayed in recent months, the Malky Mackay I met this week, and who has been vouched for by the many different people from whom we have sought advice before making this appointment, is an honourable man.”
