Fernandes blames bigger F1 teams for Caterham collapse

Tony Fernandes has pointed the blame on Formula One’s big teams, for the downfall of the sport’s two smallest teams.

Caterham and Marussia have both gone into administration, and will miss this weekend’s US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.

The former Caterham boss also ruled out making a return to the sport, as he reckons the gap has become too large and it involves too much money. Fernandes says the uneven distribution of wealth in the sport, which is upheld by the structuring of prize money, had also dashed his hopes of ever competing properly in Formula One.

Critics have long voiced their opinions on the prize fund, which tends to get sucked by the sport’s leading names, like Ferrari and Red Bull. According to reports, the bigger teams typically get about 10 times more than their smaller counterparts.

Fernandes however remains optimistic that Caterham will soon find new owners to manage them, adding that there’s even teams within Formula 1 who could want a second team, citing Red Bull / Toro Rosso as an example.
