Davydenko Announces Retirement

Nikolay Davydenko announced his retirement from professional tennis in a press conference at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

The Russian only won six tour-level matches this season after struggling to regain his full form again since his injury. Davydenko said he decided to retire in June after the French Open, where he played his final professional match against Robin Haase in the first round.

The former World No.3 retires as one of the greatest Russian tennis players. The Moscow native enjoyed a career-best season in 2009, in which he won his third ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown in Shanghai and also triumphed at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

He also reached four Grand Slam semi-finals and helped Russia to the 2006 Davis Cup title.
