National shuttler Liew Darren moved one step closer towards winning the Perak Open after securing a spot in the finals of the tournament, which is set to take place on Sunday.
Darren was forced to work his socks off in the semis, as he narrowly edged former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkifli in what was a closely contested affair at the Indera Mulia Stadium in Ipoh.
He started off strongly in the first set, taking it 21-16, before Zulfadli bounced back in the second set to clinch it at 20-22. However, Darren showed his class in the rubber set, ousting Zulfadli comfortably at 21-12, and thus securing his spot in the finals of the competition.
Meeting him in the final would be BAM shuttler, Goh Sun Huat, who is somewhat of a close rival to Darren as of now. Sun Huat’s form warranted him a spot in the Malaysian squad for the recent Incheon Asian Games, while Darren was left to rue for losing his status as the nation’s 3rd player.
